Top 5 tips for buying a diamond engagement ring

Proposing to your partner is a scary, exciting and confusing time. With all the pressures one will face surrounding this momentous time, allow me to share with you my top 5 tips when it comes to confidently buying a diamond engagement ring. We have been in the industry for over 30 years and have come across many situations that you want to avoid. Here are my top tips:

  • Do your homework: Find out what the Cut, Colour, Clarity and Carat are (the 4C’s). Also, take the time to go to a few different jewellery stores and ask to see some diamonds that are unset (loose). This will give you a good indication of the differences between the grades.

  • Work out your budget: Ignore the old sayings of “2-months’ salary”. You should spend however much you feel comfortable with…and stick to it!
  • Insist on certification: Ensure that diamonds over 0.50ct are graded by a reputable laboratory such as GIA. This gives you peace of mind and helps you compare diamonds and prices fairly. Other local reputable labs include: GSL and DCLA.

  • Use a jeweller you can trust: Having a jeweller recommended to you is always a big help. If this isn’t the case for you, then don’t worry - there are many things to look out for to help you select a good jeweller: are they members of the JAA?; ask for all quotes in writing; ask about any warranties, guarantees or refund policies; is the salesperson you are dealing with answering your questions clearly and confidently?

  • Finger size and style: There are many online ring size tools that can help you out if can’t sneak away one of your partners’ rings without raising any suspicions. Also, if you are unsure about the style of the ring, don’t stress! There is nothing wrong with buying the diamond on its own and proposing with it. You can then select the ring together. This practice is far more common than you would think.
